It is an implant placed in the airway to prevent recurrence of narrowing or obstruction after the narrowing structure (stenosis) in the trachea or bronchus is widened or the obstruction is removed to keep the airways open.
Stent migration and obstruction with secretions are possible side effects. For these reasons, patients frequently come to the hospital after stent placement and bronchoscopic procedures can be performed. Sometimes, it can lead to serious consequences such as ulcers (sores) and fistulas (connection to various organs) in the trachea or bronchus wall. Rarely, after long-term use, the stent can be filled with inflammatory secretions and cause infection.
The stent is placed under general anesthesia with the help of a rigid bronchoscope. The stent is placed in the required area through the rigid bronchoscope placed in the trachea through your mouth. Before the stent, the stenosis or obstruction must be relieved again with the rigid bronchoscope.
